Federal prosecutors including Acosta reached a plea deal with Epstein that has since come under scrutiny as being too lenient.

The current case is being pursued by the Southern District of NY. "We are proud to be standing up for them by bringing this indictment".

Schumer added that "if [Acosta] refuses to resign, President Trump should fire him" as he drew attention to the commander-in-chief's controversial relationship with Epstein.

None of those people were mentioned in the indictment.

Epstein had faced a lengthy prison sentence amid similar allegations in Florida in 2007 but struck a deal letting him plead guilty to soliciting a minor for prostitution.

Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein (above in a Florida court) is charged with trafficking underage girls for sex at his luxury homes.

The indictment alleges Epstein knew his victims were under 18. He was jailed for a bail hearing next Monday, when prosecutors plan to argue that the rich world traveler might flee if released.

Prosecutors have said Epstein should be denied bail, arguing he poses an "extraordinary risk of flight" because of his wealth, private planes and significant worldwide ties.

The hedge fund manager was arrested on Saturday at Teterboro Airport after arriving from France on his private jet and was due to appear in court.

He said Acosta had been an "excellent" secretary of labor and that he thought there were many others involved in the decisions involving the earlier Epstein case.

Federal authorities said new accusers had come forward since Mr Epstein's arrest, and they urged other possible victims to contact the FBI.

Continetti pointed out that the story is still developing and Acosta has not made a large number of public statements about the case. You can read the full unsealed indictment here. In 2002, Trump told NY magazine that Epstein was a "terrific guy" who he had known for 15 years at the time.

During filming, Schulz was in the room shouting an occasional 'Good boy .' But Snowball was the only one in the room dancing. All told , the video captured Snowball completing a diverse repertoire of 14 dance movements and two composite movements.

"I've known Jeff for fifteen years". Terrific guy. He's a lot of fun to be with. "No doubt about it - Jeffrey enjoys his social life", he said.

A spokesman for Clinton said in a statement: "President Clinton knows nothing about the bad crimes Jeffrey Epstein pleaded guilty to in Florida some years ago, or those with which he has been recently charged in NY".

"He's not spoken to Epstein in well over a decade, and has never been to Little St. James Island, Epstein's ranch in New Mexico, or his residence in Florida", Ureña added.

"With the evidence available more than a decade ago, federal prosecutors insisted that Epstein go to jail, register as a sex offender and put the world on notice that he was a sexual predator".

"The alleged behavior shocks the conscience", Berman said.

The image of Mr Epstein was taken on May 18 2005.

"This is ancient stuff", Mr Epstein's lawyer Reid Weingarten said in court, calling the case a "redo" by the Government.

Epstein's defense lawyers negotiated his plea deal with then U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta, appointed by Trump in 2017 as labor secretary in his Cabinet. Often they would be invited to carry out a massage nude before being subjected to sexual abuse, it says.

Now grown up, the women plan to attend the latest appearance of Epstein in Manhattan Federal Court on charges of allegedly sex trafficking in minors. Asked if the president had confidence in Acosta, Conway pointed to the strength of the US economy. In February of this year, a U.S. district judge in Florida agreed, ruling that the deal violated the law. Even so, the Department of Justice said in a June court filing that there was no reason to cancel it.

Representatives for Acosta did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Acosta assured lawmakers that human trafficking was "an incredibly important issue", and said his office's efforts ensured that Epstein would be punished.
