Washington DC hit by torrential rain, flooding, United States News & Top Stories

The National Weather Service classified the line of storms in the nation's capital as a once-in-100-year event. "Stay out of low areas, if in a low area that may flood, seek higher ground".

Video shared on social media by residents also document flooded parking garages and even impromptu waterfalls inside the U.S. capital's Metro transit system. NWS states that most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Images posted to social media showed drivers stranded in the floodwaters.

The Weather Service warns residents to avoid driving or walking into areas where water covers the roadway as the water depth may be too great to allow for safe crossing.

Emergency services used an inflatable boat to rescue one motorist stranded in their auto near the National Mall. Elsewhere in Arlington County, 38 were rescued from vehicles, and another 27 locals were safely removed from their homes, local news station WTOP reported.

On Tuesday, lawmakers narrowly approved a measure that could make it harder for the next prime minister to suspend parliament. "I think the idea of proroguing parliament is utterly and totally unacceptable from any British parliamentarian or democrat".

In Maryland, fire officials said they responded to more than 30 flooding calls and eight water rescues early Monday, but no one was hurt.

The flash floods were also reported to have caused delays at the Reagan National Airport.

Severe weather is not expected in the weekend's storms.
