The 52-year old was arrested in Chicago on Thursday night on 13 federal sex crime charges, and was expected to be taken to NY, according to officials.

U.S. Attorney's office spokesman Joseph Fitzpatrick said the R&B star was taken into custody and was being held by federal authorities.

He's expected to be extradited to NY and charged in a 13-count indictment in Brooklyn federal court.

USA attorney spokesman Joseph Fitzpatrick said that the indictment against Kelly also contained charges that revolve around child pornography and obstruction of justice.

The singer was acquitted of prior child pornography charges in 2008, five years after initially being arrested over a video that purported to show the singer with an underage girl.

In May, 11 further charges of sexual abuse and assault were brought against him.

Kelly, 52, has been arrested in Chicago by the New York Police Department and National Security investigators.

Kelly has for decades been the subject of sexual abuse allegations - some involving minors.

Drea Kelly, the singer's ex-wife, had no comment following the arrest, her rep said. He pleaded not guilty to those charges and was released on bail. Kelly faced 15 years in prison for that charge, but the young woman in that claim denied it was her and did not testify.

It is unclear what other additional charges Kelly could be facing, but Thursday's indictment is separate from those filed by Cook County prosecutors in May 2019.Those charges relate to cases involving four women that accuse Kelly of sexual assault. Fitzpatrick said Kelly's arraignment date and time had not yet been set. In March, in an interview with CBS's "This Morning", the emotional musician said: "Whether they're old rumours, new rumours, future rumours, they're not true".
