Rafael Benitez takes swipe at Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley

After three full pretty successful seasons at the club, Rafa Benitez departed Newcastle when his contract expired on June 30.

Sam Allardyce has turned down the chance to return to Newcastle United as the club's manager after rejecting their approach to replace Rafael Benitez.

"I was very flattered that I was considered but it's that thing, don't go back", he revealed. One stated "It's a disaster of an appointment" whilst another added 'no words can be written that would not get me banned from Twitter'.

Sheffield Wednesday are under attack from two angles with Newcastle confident of snatching their manager Steve Bruce and football's authorities investigating the sale of Hillsborough to owner Dejphon Chansiri in order to avoid a points deduction.

Writing on his blog for the first time since joining Dalian, Benitez highlighted the warm welcome he had received at the club, in contrast with the hard relationship he endured with Newcastle owner Ashley and his management team. I politely said "no". The former England manager has been out of work since leaving Everton at the end of the 2017-18 season. I thought it'd be better to make a quick decision for everyone.

The Magpies are keen to strike a deal for the 58-year-old as soon as possible, with the summer transfer window running down fast and the squad due to depart for the Premier League Asia Trophy in China on Saturday.

Bruce has won promotion to the Premier League on four occasions during a managerial career which has taken him from Sheffield United to Huddersfield, Crystal Palace, Birmingham, Wigan, Sunderland, Hull and Aston Villa.
