Maui wildfire grows to 10K acres; most residents return home

"We are asking everyone to conserve energy, conserve water, and do what you can to be prepared", Maui Mayor Mike Victorino said.

Assistant Fire Chief Val Martin said in a press release from the County of Maui: "All of these issues combined means the fire will likely intensify and accelerate, which may cause future evacuations and road closures".

Mayor Mike Victorino said the 3,000-acre brush fire in Maui's central valley was uncontrolled on Thursday night but it was too risky for fire crews to battle it in the dark.

County officials in Maui said a brush fire was reported around 10:42 a.m. local time Thursday near the Kuihelani Highway.

Mandatory evacuations, since lifted, covered residents and visitors in the Maalaea and North Kihei region.

"If you need to evacuate please be aware of what's going on around you". War Memorial Gym and Kamalii Elementary School may reopen as shelters if conditions worsen again.

There were also concerns about the safety of hundreds of dogs, cats and other animals threatened by the blaze, with the the Maui Humane Society rescuing several hundred of them. However, due to the numbers of cancelled flights, there were more delays at Kahului airport on Friday. Power was restored for most customers at about 3 p.m.

The blaze was still considered "uncontained" by early Friday Hawaii time and considered an "active threat", but residents were allowed to return to their homes - partly because the winds had died down Thursday night, according to the report.

So. Maui is on fire. The transmission line from Ma'aleaea Power Plant to Kihei was damaged in the fire.
