South Korea urges Japan to scrap export curbs, pledges help to firms

Kang "expressed concern that this is undesirable in terms of friendly relations between South Korea and Japan and trilateral co-operation among South Korea, the US and Japan", Kang's ministry said in a statement.

Kang noted that it would not be desirable for the friendly cooperative relationship between South Korea and Japan as well as the trilateral cooperation including the United States, stressing that South Korea has maintained a position to develop the future-oriented relations with Japan.

A South Korean lawmaker turned Tokyo's accusation on its head Thursday by revealing documents suggesting Japan had, in the past, covertly exported strategic industrial materials to North Korea that can be used to develop chemical or nuclear weapons.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday criticized comments by Japanese officials who questioned the credibility of Seoul's sanctions against North Korea while defending Tokyo's stricter controls on high-tech exports to South Korea.

In an annual document published by the US -led United Nations Command, the USA military stated Japan could intervene if a crisis occurred on the Korean Peninsula, South Korean television network SBS reported Thursday.

"The Japanese government's move to inflict damage on our economy to serve political purposes and link (the issue) with sanctions against North Korea (DPRK) without any evidence is surely not ideal for the friendship and security cooperation between the two countries", Moon said.

"I came because there are a lot of bilateral issues between South Korea and the United States to be discussed in meetings with the White House and also the Senate and House", Kim told South Korean reporters at Dulles International Airport.

"Whether Japan implements additional measures depends on South Korea's response", he told a news conference after a Cabinet meeting.

Its arrival came two months after another ship, the Fatih , began drilling off Cyprus's west coast escorted by a frigate. Turkey already has a ship off Cyprus and Cyprus issued arrest warrants for its crew in June.

However, analysts say the United States is unlikely to become a mediator in the dispute.

A former Japanese ambassador to the United States, Ichiro Fujisaki, questioned the need for USA mediation.

Moon spoke hours after South Korean officials told a WTO meeting in Geneva that the Japanese measures would have repercussions for electronics products worldwide and called for their withdrawal. The ruling held that Japanese companies have to pay compensation to individual victims of forced labor during Japan's occupation of Korea.

Japan says the issue of forced labour was fully settled in 1965 when the neighbours restored diplomatic relations.

Also for the first time, U.S. Forces Korea, in an annual publication called "Strategic Digest". have referred to Japan's military involvement, . saying that UN Command (quote) "continues to ensure the support and force flow through Japan that would be necessary in times of crisis".

"He is likely to begin with what I would call deep listening".

Samsung Electronics is the world's largest memory semiconductor maker, with its chips accounting for some 20% of South Korean exports.

Samsung shares were 1.9% higher and SK Hynix stock was up 4.6% as of 0537 GMT, while the broader index was up 0.6%.
