Thousands of troops paraded down the Champs-Elysees.

"Never, since the end of World War II, has Europe been so important".

At the 2017 parade, Macron's guest of honor was the freshly-inaugurated US President Donald Trump as the young French leader sought to take the initiative in forming a bond with his counterpart.

As Macron explained, this move will allow the country to better protect its satellites, noting that the exact investment is yet to be determined.

Mr Macron's European Intervention Initiative is a 10-country coalition of European militaries ready to react to crises and the French-led initiative, which includes Germany, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, Estonia, the Netherlands, Spain and Portugal, was launched a year ago.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday announced the creation of a new national military space force command that will eventually be part of his country's air force. It is the theme of this parade.

The celebration included shows new military technology such as anti-drone guns, miniature autonomous vehicles and French inventor Franky Zapata hovering above the water on a device known as a flyboard.

In Paris, the focus this year was the European Defense Initiative, a coalition formed last year to prepare for possible military action outside of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The French-led initiative, which includes Germany, Belgium, Britain, Denmark, Estonia, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal, was launched previous year, according to Reuters.
