Serena Williams' wait for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title goes on after Simona Halep stunned the off-key American 6-2 6-2 in a one-sided Wimbledon final on Saturday.

Until this year, she had never got beyond the semi-finals at Wimbledon while a last-four run in 2015 remains her best performance at the US Open.

Below all of the mentions of Serena Williams, her opponent in Saturday's final, there already was inscribed: "Miss S. Halep".

And Halep was delighted she was able to stamp her game on the American.

The 27-year-old set the tone by breaking the Williams serve in the opening game and raced into a 4-0 lead in front of 15,000 incredulous fans.

Instead of engaging with the unnecessary negativity surrounding the former actress, Williams instead took the opportunity to speak to her friend's unbelievable character.

The victor of the Conservative Party leadership race - and next prime minister - will be announced on 23 July. He's refused to rule out proroguing - or suspending - Parliament to fulfill that pledge.

During a press conference at Wimbledon, Williams was asked to comment on the negative media her friend was receiving said and she said the following, "I didn't know there was negative media out there". I had the chance to meet her after the match.

Williams knew she needed to loosen up and quickly, and she stopped the rot with a service hold, striking the ball with much greater fluidity.

The pattern continued in the second set - with Halep's superior speed and waspish groundstrokes allowing her to get Williams's cannonballs back with interest until she had forced the error.

Halep was adamant she played "the best match of my life" and it wasn't just her who was emotional about achieving a lifelong dream. At times she looked overcome with the pressure and the weight of the record books.

"She played out of her mind", Williams, who had won nine of her previous 10 matches against Halep, said on court after picking up the runners-up salver for the second straight year, having ran into a similarly inspired Angelique Kerber last year.

New mum Meghan Markle waved at crowds as she finally arrived at the royal box to watch today's Wimbledon game. But she was determined to change that and said she told the locker-room attendants at the beginning of the tournament she wanted to grab a title to earn lifetime membership in the All England Club.

She is Romania's first Wimbledon singles champion. I like that. He's a good person. I think it's just coming out there and doing the best that you can. "I always play well when I have emotions".
