Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), who are all women of color.

The women were all born in the United States, except for Omar, who became a refugee at age 10 when a brutal civil war devastated Somalia, a predominantly Muslim country in East Africa.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, has feuded with the group in an increasingly bitter intra-party fight, but came to their defense Sunday along with other Democratic colleagues.

While the women are unnamed, it is likely the US President was referring to Democratic Somali-American Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. "Which is why we are fighting to protect it from the worst, most corrupt and inept president we have ever seen", responded Omar on Twitter.

Three of Trump's apparent targets - Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley and Tlaib - were born and raised in the United States.

With his remarks, Trump again inserted himself into a growing rift between Pelosi and the newly elected congresswomen, after offering an unsolicited defence of the Democratic speaker days earlier.

USA house speaker Nancy Pelosi said Mr Trump wants to "make America white again".

According to a spokesman for the campaign, Trump didn't tell the Democrats to "go back" anywhere because he also then said that they should later return to the United States, an obviously honest addition on the president's part. Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., linked Trump's advocacy of the birther movement to his Sunday comments treating his political opponents as outsiders who do not belong in the United States.

Mark Morgan, the acting commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection, in a previously scheduled appearance on "Face the Nation" on CBS, said only: "You're going to have to ask the president what he means by those specific tweets".

"THIS is what racism looks like", the MA lawmaker tweeted Sunday. And previous year, during a White House meeting on immigration, he wondered why the USA was admitting so many immigrants from "s***hole countries" like Haiti, El Salvador and several African nations.

Also, Pelosi reacted angrily and called trump's Remarks xenophobic.

Ms Pressley, the first black woman elected to the USA house from MA, was born in Cincinnati.

Trumps verbal attack fell on the day for which the President had big announced-scale raids against people without papers in the United States.
