Local events to celebrate Apollo 11 moon landing anniversary

Perhaps fittingly, there's a full moon up in the night sky, for the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Apollo 11 lunar mission.

- The nation will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11 starting on Tuesday - but D.C. got a sneak preview of what's in store to celebrate the beginning of the historic trip to the moon.

The walk on the moon by two USA astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, 50 years ago on July 20, 1969, marked the greatest adventure ever undertaken by mankind and fulfilled the dream of all past generations to reach the moon.

There will be seven sets as part of the Lego City Mars Exploration series ranging from a Satellite Service Mission set costing £9.99 and featuring a shuttle with opening minifigure cockpit to a Rocket Assembly and Transport set that costs £119.99. He says the display is a 1:110 scaled-model that stands about 3 feet tall. On hand for the unveiling were Vice-President Mike Pence, NASA chief Jim Bridenstine and Armstrong's son, Rick.

Ever since the Apollo 11 mission touched down on the lunar surface on July 20, 1969 and Neil Armstrong uttered the phrase "one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind" conspiracy theories, and debunkings, have abounded. Just as I don't have personal memories of the depression or World War II, a many people today don't have personal memories of the Apollo 11 mission.

"I was always asked wasn't I the loneliest person in the whole lonely history of the whole lonely solar system when I was by myself in that lonely orbit?" he said.
