Rohan Dennis went AWOL for over an hour after abandoning the Tour de France and his Bahrain Merida team management had no explanation about the Australian's withdrawal on Thursday. "Our priority is the welfare of all our riders so will launch an immediate investigation but will not be commenting further until we have established what has happened to Rohan Dennis", stated the official account of the Bahraini team in a Tweet that was later removed.

It's understood Dennis was upset over the quality or brand of skinsuit he would wear for Friday's individual time trial, in which he is the current world champion.

Stangelj was asked if there had been an argument between Dennis and the team and whether Dennis was unhappy with his time trial bike.

Stage 12 of the race on Thursday was won by 26-year-old British driver Simon Yates.

He later turned up at the Bahrain-Merida bus at the finish line but left the bus with his agent and a team media officer, refusing to talk to the waiting media. "It was his decision today to stop in the feed zone".

Azkals grouped with China in World Cup, Asian Cup qualifiers
The Saudis, which played at the 2018 World Cup, are top-seeded in Group D that also has Uzbekistan, Palestine and Singapore. Qatar need not have entered qualification, but have done that to confirm their place in the 2023 Asian Cup.

"It was his decision to stop - we tried to speak to him, we stopped the vehicle and tried to find a solution to what is going on".

But when asked whether Dennis was hard to work with, Stangelj said: "I didn't have any problem with him this season".

"His condition is not bad, it's good enough to compete in the Tour de France", he added.

"I've had no problem with him this season - he's a special guy, all the champions are, he's 100% when he wants something".
