Kiwis are flocking to cinemas to see the new Lion King film with the live-action Disney reboot enjoying a record-breaking opening at the New Zealand box office.

The Lion King is released Friday in the UK.

There could be any number of reasons for this change, including a few plot holes from the original Lion King - for example, why would the super-strong Mufasa need his weaker brother's help scaling the cliffside?

Favreau said that in the 25 yeas since the original film was released, the comedy has dated.

Argentina brands Hezbollah terrorist organisation, freezes assets
Further, Argentina placed Hezbollah on a new list of people and groups with terrorism ties. No-one has ever been brought to trial in connection with the bombing.

British TV personality John Oliver is surprisingly stiff and unfunny as Zazu, Mufasa's hornbill majordomo, while Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner breathe loony new life into their comic relief roles as Pumbaa the warthog and Timon the meerkat.

One major difference that sets the 2019 version apart from the original is Beyonce's new song, "Spirit," which plays in the scene where Simba and Nala return home. "Endgame" shattered records when it opened in April and has made more than $2.7 billion globally.

"The Lion King" could also dethrone the current July opening record holder "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2", which opened with $169 million in 2011 and is the 13th biggest North American opening of all time.

The movie also surpassed the local opening day box office of Avengers: Infinity War and claimed the biggest opening yet for a Disney Studio film, with the Motion Picture Distributors' Association of New Zealand revealing it has raked in $1.3 million so far. It's already topped $130 million internationally and is opening in most markets this weekend. The second weekends of "Crawl" and "Stuber" and the third frame of "Yesterday" will be battling for fourth place at around $5 million each against Disney's ninth weekend of "Aladdin", which has gone past $335 million domestically.
