Major blackout plays havok with U.K. trains, traffic

A tweet said: "The power network has failed in the large parts of London and the South East".

A spokesperson said: "There were some issues with regard to our outpatient areas and the generator that provides cover".

The Energy Emergencies Executive Committee, carrying out the inquiry, will also explore whether there were any technical problems, plus how well National Grid communicated about the incident and restored the problem.

Trains between Stevenage and Kings Cross are at a standstill.

The UK is experiencing major power failures, with trains, airports and traffic lights having all been affected, the BBC reports.

Tim Green of the Energy Futures Laboratory at Imperial College London said failures were at a gas-fired power plant in southern England and a wind farm in the North Sea.

A WPD tweet said: "We are now experiencing a major incident on the national electricity infrastructure".

Depending on what industry leaders report, Ofgem has warned that "enforcement action" may be taken.

Some 110,000 were affected in Yorkshire and northeast England.

Network Rail said all trains had been stopped after a "power surge on the National Grid" but its signalling system had come back online.

The airport said in a statement that the "unprecedented rainfall" had caused "water damage in a number of locations in the terminal" and apologized for the disruption.

"All the traffic lights were down, but there were no police present... it was like witnessing something out of an apocalyptic film", Harriet Jackson told Britain's Press Association in south London.

"No one knew what was going on and, given it's a Friday afternoon, it's the last thing you want to encounter".

Andrew Adonis, a former chairman of Britain's National Infrastructure Commission, said National Grid had "some big questions to answer" about how a relatively brief power cut had caused nationwide mayhem on the railways.

Transmission and distribution leaders have gathered for an initial review of the circumstances which led to a major power outage across large parts of the United Kingdom power grid.

"People whose journey was severely disrupted should also keep receipts for all unexpected costs that arose from their efforts to complete their journeys yesterday, and contact their train operator to claim not just for their delay but any additional expenses they incurred".
