Woman's body found following Sydney CBD stabbing attack

New South Wales state police said in a statement that a man was arrested, and that a woman was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The body of another woman was found in a unit in Clarence Street, and police said they were investigating whether there was a link to the stabbing rampage.

Members of the public rushed to detain the man, using milk creates and chairs, before he was arrested by police and taken to Day Street Police Station on a stretcher.

Witnesses report that a man was seen running through the area armed with either a large knife or a machete.

Video shows the man jumping onto a auto roof in the middle of the street before being restrained by members of the public with milk crates and chairs.

"A short time later, members of the public detained the man before police attended and arrested him".

At least one person has been stabbed in a violent incident in Sydney's CBD.

An employee from the shop told news.com.au he saw the man run past.

"They were armed with crowbars and one man had an axe and another man ..."

Luke O'Shaughnessy and his brother Paul, who work nearby on King Street, heard screams from their window and immediately ran out to the street where they noticed blood on the ground.

"He had a balaclava on and wielding a knife with blood on and we thought: 'Wow, what is going on here?'".

"These people are heroes, and I want to acknowledge that".

Superintendent Gavin Wood said the man had made "multiple attempts" to stab other people but was "luckily unsuccessful", the ABC reported. The attacker is now in police custody following the courageous actions of those who were present at the scene and were able to ... restrain him.

"So insane! A random dude just started stabbing people in the city right outside where we were having lunch".

King Street is closed to traffic between Clarence and York Street with motorists also urged to avoid the area.

"We had a window open to get some air in and then we just heard the commotion ... we looked out and saw him on top of a vehicle wielding a knife and we all just kind of reacted from there", said Mr Cuthbert.

"They were courageous, and and i can only use that word seriously, they were significantly fearless people".

Dozens of Police have swarmed the area along with a number of ambulances.

"A number of crime scenes have been established", a spokesperson said.

There was fireys chasing him with axes and he went around the corner.
