Chandrayaan-2 to enter Moon orbit around 9.30am tomorrow

ISRO chief K Sivan on Tuesday announced at Bengaluru that Chandrayaan 2 had successfully entered the lunar orbit and soft landing on the moon will take place on September 7. The duration of maneuver was 1738 seconds.

Though ISRO can adjust this distortion, Sivan said, it comes at a cost.

Chennai: The Indian space agency on Tuesday completed successfully the crucial orbit manoeuvre and put the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft into the lunar orbit.

"Now the tension has only increased, not reduced", he said. ISRO's GSLV-MkIII-M1 had launched the spacecraft into the orbit of the Earth on July 22 from the spaceport of Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

The lander will then separate from the orbiter and use rocket fuel to brake as it attempts to land in the south polar region of the moon on September 7. We will provide a critical velocity to Chandrayaan-2: reduce its velocity and change its direction so that it enters Moon's orbit.

It is also labelled "415 ppm CO2", referring to the record level of carbon dioxide measured in the atmosphere last May. The plaque bears the words: "This monument is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done.

Chandryaan-2 comprises an Orbiter, the Lander (Vikram) and the Rover (Pragyaan). The rover will remain on the moon for 14 days. But if it approached at a slow velocity, the Moon's gravity would pull the Chandrayaan-2 and it might crash into the surface.

Once it's in lunar orbit 100 kilometres above the surface, the spacecraft will send a lander on a controlled descent to the surface.

ISRO states that the mission will help it in gaining a better understanding of the origin and evolution of the Moon for which it will conduct detailed topographical studies, comprehensive mineralogical analyses, and a host of other experiments on the lunar surface.

"While there, we will also explore discoveries made by Chandrayaan-1, such as the presence of water molecules on the Moon and new rock types with unique chemical composition", it said.

After Chandrayaan-2's insertion into the lunar orbit, ISRO will carry out four more orbit maneuvers (August 21, 28, 30 and September 1) to enter it into its final orbit passing over lunar poles at a distance of about 100 km from the Moon's surface.
