Williams, seeded eighth, has won 23 grand slam titles - the last at the Australian Open in 2017.

American Serena Williams, last year's finalist who is seeking a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title, is seeded eighth while another former victor, Sloane Stephens, is 11th.

Angelique Kerber, the 2016 champion, is seeded 14th.

Cori Gauff faces a hard route to glory at the US Open with an early meeting with world No 1 Naomi Osaka on the cards.

Other interesting first-round matches on the men's side include an all-Canadian affair between No. 18 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov and Tsitsipas against Andrey Rublev, who routed Federer last week in the Western & Southern Open.
