Washington Gov. Jay Inslee is dropping out of the 2020 Democratic presidential race, he announced Wednesday night on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show".

Inslee told MSNBC it had "become clear" he would not be the Democratic party's nominee and was thus withdrawing his candidacy, following in the footsteps of the California representative Eric Swalwell and the former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper. "I'm not gonna be the president, so I'm withdrawing tonight from the race".

"I want to continue to stand with you in opposing Donald Trump and rejecting his hurtful and divisive agenda, while strengthening and enhancing Washington state's role as a progressive beacon for the nation", Inslee wrote Thursday in an email to supporters, as he launched his gubernatorial re-election campaign.

The withdrawal came after Inslee failed to qualify for a September 4 CNN town hall on the issue he ran on: climate change.

In a statement, Inslee said numerous Democratic candidates launched their campaigns with little attention to climate change. "Climate change is real and it's a crisis-and I will keep fighting alongside you to take bold action before it is too late". "Numerous campaigns started with little attention to climate, but since our campaign began, we've seen nearly every serious candidate put out a climate plan; we've seen climate come up in both debates; and we now have two networks hosting nationally-televised climate forums in September". "I think a number of them have intriguing ideas, but we need all of them to raise their game", Inslee said. Inslee has been a long-shot candidate since he announced his presidential ambitions in March.

Franz said Wednesday night that she's not disappointed that she won't be entering the governor's race, saying that she loved her current job and has "a lot of work to do". I felt good saying that the first days of my campaign.

"With Governor Inslee at the helm, Washington State's economy has boomed while we have made great strides in creating a more just and equitable society", she said in a statement. Not only did we hit this high bar set by the DNC, but more importantly, together, we changed and shaped the entire national dialogue around climate change.

Still, he said he believed that the campaign had been a success, by prompting other candidates to take the issue of climate change seriously. "And thanks to you, every candidate knows they have to have a robust plan to defeat the climate crisis". "I feel very good saying that now", he added.
