In a transcript published on China's Foreign Ministry website, Geng said "China-Canada relations have encountered serious difficulties due to Canada's arrest of Meng Wanzhou without cause". Ms. Meng's lawyers in her extradition case have cited U.S President Donald Trump's own words, suggesting he might intervene in the case as part of trade talks.

Urging the Canadian side to reflect upon its mistakes, Geng said Canada should treat China's solemn position and concerns seriously and immediately release Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei.

While no official link was made, the arrest of the two men was widely viewed as retaliation.

The airport security footage on the day of Meng's arrest on December 1, last year, shows her luggage being searched by the Canada Border Service Agents (CBSA).

"President Trump mentioned it directly in his meeting with President Xi Jinping - I was there", he said.

At a press conference in Ottawa, Pompeo said China's arbitrary detention of the two Canadians was "fundamentally different as a human rights matter, as a rule of law matter" than Meng's extradition case.

Ms Meng is now living under house arrest in Vancouver, Canada, and is waging a legal battle against extradition to the US.

China and the US are now embroiled in a trade war that has roiled global financial markets. "They want to talk about these two as if they are equivalent, as if they were morally similar, which they fundamentally are not".

A reading above 50 points indicates an expansion, and the long-term trend appears to be heading towards stagnation. Analysts also say the tit-for-tat tariffs between the US and China are also having an impact.

Mr. Pompeo did say that the United States has been "very clear" about the inappropriate nature of the detention of the two men, saying it was discussed today and it is discussed often.

Since the Meng arrest, China has stopped importing some Canadian products such as canola seed and meat.

"It is a legal process by the United States Department of Justice created to bring someone who we believe we have sufficient information to bring back to the United States under an (extradition) agreement between the United States and Canada", Mr Pompeo insisted.

Pompeo's visit is the latest indication of how bilateral ties have improved since hitting a low point in June 2018 when Trump called the Canadian leader weak and dishonest.

He says the Forces knew about Master Corporal Patrik Mathews back in April before the media got wind of it. Mathews met with local commanders and Vance says he then applied to leave the Forces, he has not been arrested or charged with any crime.

Freeland said she would travel to Cuba next week to discuss possible ways of ending the crisis.

"We're both thanking the Americans for their support on that issue and continue to talk how we move forward on that", Trudeau said.

When asked at Thursday's press conference if the United States is using Ms. Meng as a bargaining chip, Mr. Pompeo flatly said no, adding that the extradition treaty between Canada and the a legal process.
