West Nile virus outbreak declared in Las Vegas area

Those positive samples were found in north, east and south Davis between August 6 and August 20, according to the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District.

According to the news release, there are 26 positive cases of West Nile reported in Fresno County.

Who is at risk for West Nile Virus?

In response to this week's findings, the city said ground spraying will continue in parks and open areas as needed in order to reduce mosquito populations and the vector control district will continue to monitor and conduct laboratory surveillance.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 20 percent of people bitten by infected mosquitoes get sick.

The statement said most people infected with the virus will not become ill.

In a recent conversation with Randolph County Health Specialist Scot Enghaus, he stated that a case of West Nile had been reported.

The county's Health and Human Services office said Thursday the mosquitoes were south of Lake Mary Road in Flagstaff.

No particular person in the county has contracted West Nile Virus until now. More than 38,600 mosquitoes have been submitted for testing this year. Some species of mosquitoes carry West Nile, which could be lethal when transmitted to individuals.

The office that although they will continue to monitor the situation closely with increased mosquito trapping and testing, they are urging residents throughout the entire state to take simple measures to avoid mosquito bites such as using mosquito repellent and covering bare skin, especially at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Other recommended repellents include: picaradin, lemon eucalyptus oil, para-menthane-diol or IR3535.

Use insect repellents according to the manufacturer's instructions. Wear proper clothing and repellent if outside during these times.

Make sure screens fit tightly over doors and windows to keep mosquitoes out of homes.
