The latest forecasted track for Hurricane Dorian as of 11 a.m. ET on Monday, Sept. 2.

After pounding the Abacos and leaving a trail of snapped trees, flipped cars and missing rooftops in the northern Bahamas, a Category 5 Hurricane Dorian moved over to low-lying Grand Bahama, where it sat over the island as it moved at just 1 mile per hour.

Abaco Buzz, a local travel website, has also been posting updates on the search for family and friends on its Facebook page.

Jack Pittard, a 76-year-old American who has visited the Bahamas for 40 years, also chose to stay put on Abaco for Dorian, which he said was his first hurricane.

Bahamas radio station ZNS Bahamas reported a mother and child on Grand Bahama had called to say they were sheltering in a closet and seeking help from police.

The storm made landfall on Great Abaco Island with sustained winds of 185 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center, a speed that hasn't been reached since a Labor Day 1935 storm in the Florida Keys.

The storm was downgraded to a Category 4 with sustained winds of 155 mph on Monday, still enough punch to continue to mercilessly pound the islands as it crawled within 30 miles of Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Winds have decreased to 165MPH but Dorian remains an extremely unsafe storm.

'Castaway Cay remains south of the more significant weather and is now experiencing tropical storm force winds, which based on the current forecast, are expected for the next several hours before gradually diminishing.

This story was reported from Cincinnati.

Forecasters said Dorian was most likely to begin pulling away from the Bahamas early on Tuesday and curving to the northeast parallel to the US Southeast seaboard.

"We are in the midst of a historic tragedy", Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said, calling the devastation "unprecedented and extensive". "I ask for your prayers for those in affected areas and for our first responders". Hurricane and storm surge warnings remain in effect for stretches of Florida's coast, and the effects of the storm are expected to be felt in Georgia and the Carolinas this week.

A hurricane watch is in effect for Florida from north of Deerfield Beach to the Jupiter Inlet, and from Florida's North Vedra Beach to the South Santee River in SC.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp also ordered evacuations in all or parts of six coastal counties also effective on Monday.

Another video, shared by WFLA News reporter Josh Benson, showed the inside of a destroyed building in the Abaco Islands.

Weekend traffic was light in Florida despite the many evacuation orders, unlike during the chaotic run-up to Hurricane Irma in 2017, when the unusually broad storm menaced the entire state.

"We can't make everybody happy, but we believe we can keep everyone alive", the governor said.
