The Speaker continued: "It's one of the longest for decades and it represents an act of executive fiat".

But Opposition MPs refused to take part, instead, they staged a "sit-in" and singing anthems such as The Red Flag, Ode to Joy and Flower of Scotland.

Tributes poured in, with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn praising Mr Bercow for being a "superb Speaker" who had "totally changed the way in which the job has been done".

Bercow has served as speaker of parliament's lower chamber for 10 years, overseeing heated debates on Brexit and making decisions as to what the house should do, based on centuries of precedent.

Also on rt.com I beg your pardon! His tenure inspired memes galore and many of his most memorable moments and smackdowns went viral online - with some even putting them to music.

He would remain separate from political issues, even in retirement.

Bercow is best known for presiding over debates, bellowing "Order!".

"We degrade this parliament at our peril".

Bercow has angered the Conservative government by repeatedly allowing lawmakers to seize control of Parliament's agenda to steer the course of Brexit. Conservatives were furious, and Business Secretary Angela Leadsom called Bercow's move a "flagrant abuse" of the parliamentary process.

Before walking to the Lords, Mr Bercow said of the protest: "I recognise that our presence is desired by our Majesty the Queen's Commissioners".

The Prime Minister said the government would use the coming period to continue negotiating an agreement with the European Union, while "preparing for an exit without agreement".

The prorogation, suspending Parliament for five weeks and ending the longest parliamentary session in United Kingdom history, makes a general election extremely unlikely until at least mid-November.

Some of the most passionate farewells on Monday came from the Labour Party.

He said: "The role of Speaker is vital to our democracy". If they don't he will quit October 31 - the day Britain is due to leave the European Union.

Last week, lawmakers defeated Johnson to pass a law ordering Johnson to seek a delay from the October 31 Brexit deadline.

Mr Bercow has told MPs that if parliament votes in favour of an early election, he will quit before the campaign. Johnson returned to Parliament on Monday with the same request.
