Nintendo's Ring Fit Adventure is like Wii Fit for the Switch

The video game maker unveiled on Thursday "Ring Fit Adventure", which is sold with a new piece of hardware - a squeezable electronic ring that senses pressure. Ring Fit Adventure can be tailored to the player's level of skill, so even if players don't have experience with fitness, they can adjust the exercise intensity to suit their ability.

So instead of casting a Fire spell or swinging a sword, Ring Fit adventurers inflict damage by flexing the Fit-Con, performing squats, or executing a ideal warrior pose.

Encounters with other creatures put players through their paces with over 40 different fitness exercises divided into four different categories: arms, core muscles, legs, and yoga-inspired movements.

If turn-based battles focus on strength exercises, then overworld exploration is much more cardio based.

When you're not breaking open crates, hoovering up coins and hovering over gaps by squeezing and pulling the Fit-Con, you'll need to raise those knees to wade through water and climb steep sets of stairs.

To play the game, players attach the Joy-Con controllers from their Nintendo Switch system to the included accessories - one to the Ring-Con and one to the Leg Strap. "Ring Fit Adventure combines gaming and physical activity in a way that incentivizes people to keep coming back for more".

"Nintendo has always had a lot of success appealing to non-hardcore audiences and reinventing the norms of console play", said Laine Nooney, assistant professor and historian of video games at New York University.
