The Big Bang Theory: HBO Max acquires streaming rights in record deal

WarnerMedia's upcoming SVoD service HBO Max has secured the exclusive streaming rights to The Big Bang Theory in a deal worth reportedly in excess of $1 billion.

Big-money streaming deals for Seinfeld and The Big Bang Theory have been done, proving the pulling power of familiar TV shows as the streaming wars heat up. It concluded with a finale in May this year.

Launching in Spring 2020, WarnerMedia's streaming platform is the first to have USA streaming rights to the recently wrapped CBS comedy. As The Hollywood Reporter points out, HBO Max paid $425 million to bring Friends, another Warners produced show, to the streaming service. It was executive produced by Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady, Steve Mollaro and Steve Holland.

While this was a major win for WarnerMedia, this was also another major hit for Netflix, as it recently lost the exclusive streaming rights to both The Office and Friends, to which the latter will also be migrating to HBO Max in the spring. Now they have The Big Bang Theory as well. Television, the comedy created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady has also extended its syndication deal with TBS and will air on the network through 2028.
