Elon Musk, who is being sued for defamation by a man who helped in the dramatic rescue of 12 boys trapped in an underwater cave in Thailand a year ago, says the term "pedo guy" is a common insult used in South Africa when he was growing up.

Mr Unsworth's lawyer L. Lin Wood called his client "a good man whose efforts saved the lives of 13 people".

Unsworth sued two months later in Los Angeles federal court, saying Musk falsely branded him a pedophile and child rapist, and denying those allegations. "Pedo man was a frequent insult employed in South Africa when I was growing up".

Musk, who is being sued for defamation in Los Angeles by Vernon Unsworth, who helped in the dramatic rescue of 12 boys trapped in an underwater cave in Thailand previous year, claimed the term "paedo guy" was a common insult used in South Africa when he was growing up. Musk said in a deposition that he started to fear Unsworth could be the next Jeffrey Epstein, basing his conjecture on unsubstantiated information from the private investigator.

The Tesla chief executive is seeking to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought by Vernon Unsworth over a tweet by Mr Musk past year. The term is "aimed at mocking a person's appearance and demeanor, not an accusation of pedophilia", and the insult could be interpreted as an opinion, Musk's attorneys argue.

Specifically, by emails with Buzzfeed reporter Ryan Mac, which Musk unilaterally claimed were "off the record", where the CEO told the reporter that he should "stop defending child rapists".

Court filings say Musk learned of the marriage from a private investigator he hired to research Unsworth.

He added that Musk could "stick his submarine where it hurts".

In a rant to a BuzzFeed News journalist that Musk regarded as off the document, Musk yet over again claimed that Unsworth became a pedophile and that he had married a 12-three hundred and sixty five days-extinct bride in Thailand.

At one point, the tech boss appeared to goad Mr Unsworth to sue him, tweeting: "You don't think it's unusual he hasn't sued me?"

The PI reported back that Unsworth was traveling to Thailand as the 1980s.

Musk did eventually apologise for his tweet and deleted it, however he has still found himself being sued over the comments.

"To the contrary, the evidence is that Mr Musk believed and intended his statements to be read as what they were: bare insults".

Musk's legal team asked the judge to dismiss the case before a scheduled December 2 trial, asserting that a BuzzFeed post about his tiff with Unsworth and his tweets do not fulfill the legal quality of defamation.
