The BJP leader was arrested by the special investigation team (SIT) of Uttar Pradesh police from his residence "Divya Dham" here amid heavy security deployment, his lawyer Pooja Singh told PTI.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said the government took action against former Union minister Swami Chinmayanand only after the woman, who accused him of rape, threatened self immolation.

The law student had alleged that she was raped repeatedly and "physically exploited" for a year by the BJP leader, whose organization runs several colleges in Shahjahanpur.

In 2018, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh had tried to withdraw a 2011 rape and abduction case against Chinmayanand, but a court in Shahjahanpur rejected its petition.

"We arrested him this morning and the court has since sent him to judicial custody for 14 days", Naveen Arora, state police inspector general, told journalists.

According to the SIT, the girl contacted one of the three persons arrested for extortion 4,200 times a year ago, adding that prima facie her involvement in the case is also being made out.

Sanjay Singh, Sachin Singh and Vikram, who were arrested today, are accused of sending a message to Chinmayanand demanding Rs five crore and threatening him with the release of objectionable videos, Arora said.

Before his arrest, Chinmayanand was taken in a senior police officer's auto to a hospital in Shahjahanpur. On August 27, the police booked Chinmayanand on kidnapping charges.

Her family accused the BJP leader of orchestrating the road accident and the federal investigating agency CBI opened a murder investigation against him.

The potential plant closures for the US were among the major sticking points for the UAW's negotiations with GM. It's unknown how many workers at suppliers in the US have been impacted by the strike.

The alleged victim, who can not be named for legal reasons, accused Chinmayanand of raping and physically exploiting her in a Facebook video released on August 22.

A few videos placed on record as evidence also show how Chinmayanand lured the student by promising her more money, a hostel room and a job. A medical checkup of Chinmayanad was also done before producing him in court. Earlier the SIT had handed over the videos and other items to the forensic team, so that it could explain and prove things to the monitoring bench of the High Court on September 23.

Senior BJP leader and three-term former MP, Swami Chinmayanand has been arrested in connection with rape charges. Last week, she recorded her statement before a local court.

Arora added that the law student and Chinmayanand had exchanged phone calls around 200 times since January 1, 2019.

The student had earlier threatened self-immolation if the police do not arrest him.

Immediately after the woman went missing, Chinmayanand's lawyer Om Singh filed a case of extortion and threat on his behalf.

The SIT has also examined the principals of the two colleges where the girl studied in recent years.

Although she did not name anyone, her father named Chinmayanand in a missing-person complaint.
