WASHINGTON (AP) - Daring the weather to interfere, President Donald Trump promised Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison "something very special" with a rare Rose Garden dinner under the stars Friday night.

Morrison, who has been in office for a little over a year, thanked Trump for the "tremendous honor". Musical groups from the US military will provide the after-dinner entertainment.

Among the guests were prominent Australians and top US officials, including golf great Greg Norman, celebrity chef Curtis Stone, billionaire businessman Kerry Stokes, News Lachlan Murdoch, Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Morrison says the Australian delegation brings with it the thanks and respect of 25 million Australians for the U.S.

Melania Trump decked the Rose Garden with green and gold in Australia's honour, with yellow garden roses, wattle and golden champagne grapes decorating the tables.

The welcoming ceremony included Marine Band performances of the national anthem of both countries and a 19-gun salute and inspection of troops.

The two leaders are seeking to demonstrate a strong alliance with Morrison saying the world is a better place with the United States and that the two nations "see the world through the same lens".

He used his toast to the state dinner to ask Donald Trump for some land to erect a life-size version of the statuette he gifted the president showing WWII digger Leslie "Bull" Allen rescuing an American soldier.

A delegation of about 30 Chinese officials, led by Vice Finance Minister Liao Min, met counterparts at the U.S. Trade Representative's (USTR) office near the White House.
