Porsche Taycan 4S revealed

Like its senior Turbo and Turbo S siblings, both battery versions of the Taycan 4S are all-wheel drive with one drive motor on each axle, the rear axle working through a two-speed transmission.

The Taycan 4S can be ordered immediately and is scheduled to arrive in U.S. dealerships in spring 2020.

The Taycan 4S with the standard, single-deck Performance battery offers a capacity of 79.2 kWh for an output of 530 PS, with power consumption rated at 24.6 kWh/100 km.

The single-layer battery also charges at a slightly reduced rate, maxing out at 225kW compared to 270kW for the double-layer 93kWh pack. The pulse-controlled inverter used on the front axle in the 4S, meanwhile, operates with up to 300 amps, and the inverter on the rear axle with up to 600 amps. After all, how can you name a vehicle with no turbocharged engine a Turbo?

While Porsche aficionados will instantly recognize the 4S nameplate from other models like the 911 and the Panamera, the Taycan puts a unique spin on it by breaking it down into two powertrains.

Regardless of battery size, the 4S offers through-the-road all-wheel drive from a pair of electric motors, and it takes 3.8 seconds to reach 60 miles per hour from a stop.

Porsche has expanded its Taycan electric saloon line-up with the addition of a new 4S variant. However, the rear motor is 80mm shorter than it is in the Turbo and Turbo S, while it also receives smaller brakes, down to 360mm and six pistons on the front and 358mm and four pistons at the rear. As with its Turbo S and Turbo siblings, the Taycan 4S features three-chamber adaptive air suspension as standard, paired with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) electronic damping. Like Audi, Porsche has partnered with Amazon to make the process of getting a home charger installed as painless as possible. With either battery, and under ideal circumstances, charging from 5% to 80% state of charge can occur in as little as 22.5 minutes.

As standard, the Taycan 4S comes with a partial leather interior as well as front comfort seats with eight-way electrical adjustment and driver memory.

The exterior styling is simpler - again, before options - but all of Porsche's clever chassis systems remain intact beneath.

With the Taycan, Porsche offers an entirely leather-free interior for the first time.

The Taycan 4S is now up for order at $103,800 for the Taycan 4S and $110,380 with the 93.4 kWh "Performance Battery Plus". The Taycan Turbo starts at $150,900, and the Taycan Turbo S starts at $185,000, all excluding $1,350 for processing, delivery and handling.
