Influenza immunization clinics will start the week of October 21 across the province, and health officials issued a reminder to Albertans Friday to get the vaccine as flu season approaches. The flu itself can lead to respiratory failure and death. And while anyone can catch the flu, those most susceptible to serious flu complications include children under 5 years old, pregnant women, adults over 65 years old and those with chronic illness (like asthma or diabetes). Like any virus, the more people who contract it the more it spreads.

Bhowmick: Besides protecting you from common strains of the flu, the vaccine will lessen the severity of symptoms if you contract a strain that was not included. The virus typically travels from south to north, and how the flu circulated in Australia is one factor scientists use to make flu forecasts.

Since it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take effect, you should head to a pharmacy or clinic before cases start spreading in your community. The Indiana Health Commissioner says, "Although we can't predict how severe our flu season will be, we are already seeing influenza activity in Indiana, so it's important that Hoosiers take steps quickly to protect themselves and their loved ones". Fortunately, there were not many people infected.

"Serial stowaway" arrested at Chicago airport for 2nd time
A woman known to police for trying to evade capture by airport security was arrested again at Chicago O'Hare airport, police said. TSA agents allegedly saw the 67-year-old moving lane dividers in an attempt to circumvent a security checkpoint at 10:05 p.m.

The cost of this season's vaccine is about $12.5 million.

The CDC recommendation of having the vaccine by late October is appropriate. In 2017, Australia experienced its most severe flu season, and six months later, when winter rolled around in North America, so did the USA, with approximately 79,000 dead. "The efficacy of all these vaccines is very high", she assured. "But the best move is to get the vaccine right now". However, you may still catch the flu, even with a vaccine, because the virus has the ability to change after (or even before) the vaccine is administered.

She also said the study "indicated that nearly 50% of students rely on advice from parents" or other family members when it comes to getting the vaccine.
