Boxer Patrick Day transported to hospital after vicious KO

The 27-year-old's head bounced hard against the ground as he fell down at the one minute, 46 second mark, prompting referee Celestino Ruiz to waive off the fight and summon medics into the ring at the Wintrust Arena.

The severity of the knockout quickly became apparent as he received medical attention in the ring before being rushed to hospital where it was later announced he had undergone brain surgery. Day remained unconscious as he was taken to an ambulance and then suffered a seizure before arriving at the hospital's emergency room for treatment, according to sources. It is not yet known if Day's coma occurred naturally or if he was placed into a medically induced coma by the doctors.

Matchday Boxing have not yet returned a DailyMail.com request for comment.

His current record is 17-4-1, 6 KOs, ESPN reported. He had a six-fight winning streak snapped in June when he lost to Carlos Adames for the NABF super welterweight and WBO NABO super welterweight titles.
