Having survived some intensive "teasing", the first-ever BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is now out in the open and ready to do battle with the Audi A3 Sedan and Mercedes-Benz CLA.

BMW has entered the premium compact sedan arena with a 2 Series Gran Coupé model that will make its debut at the Los Angeles motor show in November. The near-actuator wheel slip limitation, or ARB, helps improve traction in corners or while accelerating in slippery conditions.

Powering the 2 Series will likely be a choice of a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder making 228 horsepower and 258 lb. -ft. of torque; or a different 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 302 horsepower and 332 lb. -ft. of torque. And in BMW M235i xDrive form (fuel consumption combined: 7.1 - 6.7 l/100 km [39.8 - 42.2 mpg imp]; Carbon dioxide emissions combined: 162 - 153 g/km*) it comes as standard with BMW xDrive all-wheel drive.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is part of the control/operating concept.

BMW M235i xDrive fuel consumption combined: 7.1 - 6.7 l/100 km [39.8 - 42.2 mpg imp]; CO 2 emissions combined: 162 - 153 g/km. The 228i xDrive Gran Coupe rushes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in six seconds and has a top speed of 130 miles per hour.

Both are mated to an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system. The auto comes in both a 228hp 228i xDrive Gran Coupe and a 301hp M235i xDrive Gran Coupe.

For the interior BMW has infused its latest 8.8-inch touch-screen-capable infotainment system into the dash. The Lane Departure Warning system with active lane return and collision and pedestrian warning with city braking function are fitted as standard in Europe, while Active Cruise Control, the Driving Assistant including Lane Change Warning, rear collision warning and crossing traffic warning, plus the innovative reversing assistant are all available as options.

Standard specification for the M235i xDrive flagship model includes a mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential, special M Sport steering andup-rated M Sport brakes.

Additionally, the 228i receives 17-inch alloy wheels while the M235i has larger 18-inch bi-color rollers.

The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe we've been promised earlier this year is finally coming out of its secret hiding. If you want something bigger, 19-inch wheels with performance tires are optional.

The forthcoming M2 Gran Coupe, however, will likely have the 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder the two-door model has.
