Google Daydream VR is dead, kaput, it has ceased to be

The company is no stranger to pulling the plug on apps and services.

It is winding down its Daydream VR project after a two-year run, with the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL phones launched during yesterday's "Made by Google" event not supporting the platform.

Still, the Pixel line has never sold particularly well, despite some of the best tech and consumer reviews.

Google has a new laptop, but the company is aiming for a bit more of an affordable price point this time.

What sucks is that unlike the previous-gen Pixel, Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 families of smartphones - the new Pixel 4 handsets do NOT include free unlimited high quality photo/video uploads to Google Photos.

Now, it appears Google has been reading from Apple's playbook.

The Google Pixel range starts at $799 in the US.

It will likely come in standard and XL sizes and feature a Soli radar chip to enable more secure facial recognition and air gestures, as demoed in a video promo on YouTube.

The United States has blamed Iran for a series of attacks on ships in the Gulf of Oman this year, which it denies. Iranian state television reported the alleged attack resulted in an oil leak, which they say was later plugged.

As in the past, Google is less concerned with the hardware than the software.

According to Tarun Pathak, Associate Director, Mobile Devices and Ecosystems at Counterpoint Research, India still remains an attractive market which Google needs to keep a close eye on. We'll continue improving the technology that powers the new Assistant over time. For example, you can ask the Assistant to "show my photos from New York" and then say "the ones in Central Park". That matches the dimensions of the iPhone 11 Pro.

Unlike just about every other new smartphone there is no wide angle lens on the new Pixel phone.

"More and more of Google's story today is about on-device AI opens lots of possibilities for faster performance and better privacy", Technalysis Research chief analyst Bob O'Donnell said in a tweet.

Japan will, however, receive the Pixel 4-series even though it has regulatory surrounding 60GHz transmissions. Also note that it expires before the new Pixel Buds launch, so you won't be able to use it towards that purchase.

They're the first phones to ship with integrated radar. The cheaper and smaller of the two, Google Pixel 4 comes with a 5.7-inch display, while the bigger one, Pixel 4 XL sports a larger 6.3-inch display.

The fourth-generation Pixel will be the first carried by all four major U.S. wireless carriers, a distinction that may help the company boost middling sales of the line. Color options are as follows: Just Black, Oh So Orange, and Clearly White.

The new models, like Apple's latest iPhones, lack fifth-generation cellular connectivity despite many 5G networks kicking in over the next 12 months. "Where the Pixel has faltered is in getting its pricing and go-to-marketing strategy right", said Ram.
