"And there are some that are irreversible", said Rubio, who was a Trump rival for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016. Don't listen to them, you are a strong leader.

Trump mischaracterized the progress made thus far by the US military in carrying out his instructions to withdraw all 1,000 troops in northeastern Syria.

Russian Federation has moved quickly to further entrench its leadership role in the region after President Donald Trump ordered the pullout of American forces in northeastern Syria.

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Kelly Craft said separately after the council meeting that the U.S. called on Turkey to "cease undermining the campaign to defeat ISIS, cease endangering civilians, cease threatening peace, security and stability in the region, cease its offensive and declare a ceasefire immediately".

Mr Pence previously said he would meet with Mr Erdogan on Thursday and "voice the United States' commitment to reach an immediate ceasefire and the conditions for a negotiated settlement", his office said in a statement.

"If Russia wants to get involved with Syria, that's really up to them", he said.

"The US can not stick to unilateralism", Cavusoglu said.

He answered reporters' questions as he met at the White House with Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

Trump said he plans to hike tariffs on steel up to 50 percent and "immediately" halt trade negotiations with the country, specifically a $100 billion trade deal.

As Russia and the United States each launched diplomatic forays to end Turkey's invasion of northern Syria, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday defied pressure for a ceasefire and said the only way the offensive would end was if Syrian Kurdish fighters leave a designated border area "by tonight".

Harry Dunn's parents to visit White House
Harry Dunn's parents, Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn, arrived at the White House in Tuesday afternoon. There's tremendous anger, and I understand the anger from the other side very much", Trump said.

"Instead, we have a Democratic field that has leaned towards the slogans of "end endless wars" without offering much clarity about what they would actually do as president".

Trump's decision to move USA forces out of Syria effectively abandoned the Kurdish fighters, long allied with the US, and cleared the way for Turkey's invasion.

"Syria may have some help with Russian Federation, and that's fine", he said.

Late on Tuesday, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed he would not accept a ceasefire in northern Syria, despite growing pressure from the U.S. and Europe.

Ankara has long argued the Kurdish fighters are nothing more than an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, which has waged a guerrilla campaign inside Turkey since the 1980s and which Turkey, as well as the US and European Union, designate as a terrorist organization. USA troops had withdrawn from Manbij just hours before.

"Our soldiers are not in harm's way".

Trump added: "We are not a policing agent. It is time for us to go home".

In one typically contradictory tweet, Trump announced: "Big sanctions on Turkey coming!"

But as Trump defends removing troops from northeastern Syria, he's also talking up his recent decision to send more troops to Saudi Arabia to help the kingdom defend itself against Iran.

But some, including leading progressive candidate Elizabeth Warren, said if they were president they would also seek to end the USA military presence in the Middle East.
