At the age of 34, Williams has played his final Test in the black jersey, signaling that the All Blacks' third-place playoff victory over Wales at the Rugby World Cup was his last at worldwide level.

Schmidt ended his six-year tenure in charge of Ireland following the disappointing World Cup quarter-final exit last month and while he recently admitted that he would be willing to return to coaching next summer, he is not one of the contenders to replace Steve Hansen.

"This is a hugely exciting time for New Zealand Rugby", said Impey.

"Joe has made his position very clear", Impey said.

The new coaching team will be named before Christmas, but Joseph is yet to say whether he will seek the All Blacks post or remain with Japan.

While it might seem like a routine next step, an uncrewed capsule exploded during the same test just a few months ago in April. Shortly after liftoff, the capsule's SuperDraco thrusters are supposed to blast it a safe distance from the rocket.

"Those 26 candidates know what we've been saying so we're expecting that in the applications". Our standards are very high.

The appointment panel includes Impey, former All Blacks coach Sir Graham Henry, incoming chief executive Mark Robinson, high-performance boss Mike Anthony, and former Silver Ferns Coach and High-Performance Sport New Zealand director, Waimarama Taumaunu.

Joseph's assistant coach Tony Brown revealed on New Zealand television that he turned down the opportunities from both Ian Foster and Scott Robertson to join their potential All Blacks coaching teams. It was announced previous year that Schmidt would be stepping away from the role following the tournament with defence coach Andy Farrell taking his place.

"So we have a best target, which is Christmas, but we've left ourselves some wriggle room".
