ATP Finals: Rafael Nadal avoids group stage clash with Roger Federer

Apart from Djokovic, who has won the tournament five times and six-time victor Federer, the group also includes Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini.

Djokovic who won the title four years in a row between 2012-2015 has had another stellar year winning five titles, i.e. the Australian Open, Wimbledon, Madrid Masters, Paris Masters and the Tokyo ATP 500.

Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem, and Matteo Berrettini are a part of the Bjorn Borg group, whereas Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexander Zverev are a part of the Andre Aggasi group.

If fit, Nadal will face last year's champion - 22-year-old Alexander Zverev - in the last of the opening series of round robin matches, to be played on Monday evening.

Asked to rate his chances of defending the title, he added: 'Obviously it was very special lifting that trophy up previous year.

If Nadal fails to win even one spherical robin match, Djokovic might be topped world primary just by reaching the ultimate after two group-stage wins. The Swiss will nevertheless rue his missed opportunity at Wimbledon, serving for the championship against Novak Djokovic with two match points.

The Spaniard, who suffered an abdominal injury at the Paris Masters last week, tweeted: 'Despite having a small strain, I will travel to London.

Nadal has never won the ATP Finals, while Djokovic's last victory came in 2015 and Federer has endured an eight-year drought.

The tournament, won past year by Germany's Zverev, follows a round-robin format where the top two in each group then progress to the semi-finals.

Nadal is looking to win the competition for the first time.
