Southgate said Kyle Walker's worldwide career was not over despite omitting the Manchester City defender for a third successive squad, with Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold the preferred options at right-back.

Asked whether Manchester City full-back Walker's England career was over after amassing 48 caps, Southgate replied: "Absolutely not".

"We've been very pleased with the form of Kieran and Trent", said the England boss.

Jack Grealish's form for Aston Villa has not been enough to earn a call up, though Southgate confirmed the midfielder is in line for a place in the squad should any of England's other wide options drop out.

"And it's the 1,000th England game - a momentous occasion for everybody and a pretty special one to be involved with".

"As a manager, you really get a feel of the history and the privilege of leading the team, when so few people have had the opportunity to do that".

Prince Harry said he was "in awe" of the families who get on with their lives while their military partners are away for so long. Numerous families they leave behind gathered each week at the Broom Farm community Centre in the centre of the army estate.

But Mason Mount is now a doubt after suffering an ankle injury in Chelsea's 4-4 Champions League draw with Ajax on Tuesday. I'll be able to answer that question (how impressed Southgate has been) better after Sunday.

"But it's good that he's back fit and playing regularly, and he's obviously one of our most experienced defenders".

"The reality is that he's up against [Raheem] Sterling, [Marcus] Rashford, Hudson-Odoi and [Jadon] Sancho in those wide areas", Southgate said.

Hudson-Odoi also appeared for England's Under-21's in a 5-1 win over Austria last month, scoring two goals and generally wreaking havoc in the final third of the pitch.

The Chelsea centre-back was selected for October's worldwide break but could not force his way into team to make his England debut.

"He acquitted himself brilliantly with the Under-21s so we got exactly the response we'd hoped for".
