Lawmakers are seeking to find out how much Pence knew about efforts by Trump and those around him to pressure Ukraine to investigate former vice-president Joe Biden and his son Hunter, as well as foreign interference in the 2016 USA election.

John Eisenberg, the lawyer with whom Vindman spoke, has been called to testify, but is among the White House officials who've refused and aren't expected to appear.

Vindman had access to the more secure system, he said, but "it was not functioning properly" and he had to "go analog" and offer annotations on paper, rather than editing the document in the way he usually did.

Democrats have been releasing transcripts of the closed-door interviews as they prepare for the public hearings.

Former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch will testify on Friday.
