Three dead and 150 homes lost in Australia bushfires

Two other people are said to be unaccounted for and more than 30 people have been injured, a lot of them firefighters.

A koala colony in Australia was ravaged by barbarous bush fires scattered across a coastal book in the southeastern state of New South Wales.

One person was found in a burnt-out vehicle in at the Kangawalla fire, near Glen Innes and police are working to formally identify the victim.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that, if needed, the military could be called on to help some 1,300 firefighters who are tackling around 100 separate blazes.

Warmer weather brought by climate change threatens to worsen conditions for koalas, as deforestation has narrowed habitable areas, James Tremain, of the Nature Conservation Council of New South Wales, said.

Hundreds of people fled their homes along a 500-kilometre swathe of the eastern seaboard from the Queensland state border south to Forster.

"The reports were initially burns to 40 to 50 percent of her body", NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said.

Another five people remained missing in the vicinity of the Glen Innes fire and authorities held grave fears for their safety, Fitzsimmons said.

Forster is a town 300 kilometers (190 miles) north of Sydney, Australia's largest city.

On Queensland's Sunshine Coast, police ordered the total evacuation of Tewantin, a suburb of 4,565 people, before scaling back the order.

In Queensland, almost 50 wildfires were raging on Saturday.

"It was pretty scary", Mr Stewart said.

"Where we thought we had koalas, we now think they have been incinerated", Sue Ashton, president of the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, told a local news outlet.

'They have low food and no water fire took the water out and they can't go anywhere to get supplies if anyone could help be much appreciated with anything you all done so much and can't put in to words how grateful me and my family are for everyone's help, ' he wrote.

On Friday, state fire authorities issued a record number of emergency warnings, with 17 fires declared to be at an emergency level with high winds and dry-conditions fanning the flames.

"I can only recall a figure of less than 10 that we (previously) got to, which was an extraordinary event in years past", Fitzsimmons said.
