This complaint pressured Ukraine to investigate former Vice-President Joe Biden, a potential opponent for the 2020 White House race, and his son Hunter Biden, and this investigation led to the start of an impeachment inquiry of Trump by the Democratic-led House of Representatives.

Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), the top Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, said Sunday that President Trump's phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky is not an "impeachable" offense.

Nunes has described it as a "sham impeachment process" and the Republicans' desired witnesses will "provide transparency to your otherwise opaque and unfair process".

The head impeachment inquisitor, House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, argued Saturday that the whistleblower's complaint has been corroborated, which makes testimony from the whistleblower "redundant".

The next step is hearings by the Judiciary Committee, under Chairmen Jerry Nadler, a longtime Trump nemesis, to decide whether the evidence is strong enough to support formal charges, or articles of impeachment. "This is a hoax", Trump told reporters at the White House. But they are providing a remarkably consistent account of the Trump administration's actions. Under the House resolution rules, Schiff can block Republican witnesses, but they cannot block his.

For those watching television Wednesday afternoon, the president is offering some counterprogramming to the impeachment inquiry's public hearing: a joint news conference with Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, amid strains in relations between the two nations. Read the Transcript! There was NOTHING said that was in any way wrong. The panel's Democratic chairman, Representative Adam Schiff, has been a target of the Republican president's attacks since the impeachment probe was launched in September after a whistleblower within the US intelligence community brought a complaint against Trump over his July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Testimony in the closed proceedings shows that the April congratulatory call did not raise concerns, but the tone shifted on the July call that caused alarms among US officials.

Another GOP senator, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, said on CNN's "State of the Union" that officials' closed-door testimony offered so far did not establish that Trump's motive in pressuring Zelensky was personal political gain.

More transcripts are expected. "We have the other people coming forward to actually testify". But this week's hearings will probably not be the last.
