Trump to offer a Veterans Day Parade tribute in New York

Trump also used the event to tout the strength of the USA military and the October 26 death of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al- Baghdadi, saying "al-Baghdadi is dead".

"This city is graced by your presence, this nation is forever in your debt and we thank you all", Trump said.

Mr. Trump is the first sitting president to attend the event. "It's immediately made this entire event about him", Rieckhoff said on CNN's "New Day", saying Trump's presence "reeks of politics".

"You returned from war and you never forgot your friends who didn't return", Trump said.

"Veteran satisfaction is at 90 percent", the president said, adding that it's the highest in the history of the agency.

Trump also told the story of a prisoner of war Master Sgt. Roddie Edmonds who resisted a German attempt to separate the Jews out of their ranks by famously declaring, "We are all Jews here".

United States Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie discusses how it's important to honor veterans every day, not just on Veterans Day, and one way we can do that is by supporting them.

"You are the reason our hearts swell with pride, our foes tremble with fear, and our nation thrives in freedom".

The president honored fallen American troops from past wars, and added that the United States will never forget the September 11, 2001, attacks that initiated the War on Terror.

Trump will remain in New York overnight Monday, delivering remarks to the Economic Club of New York City Tuesday before returning to Washington.

The 100 annual Veterans Day Parade steps off at 12 p.m. and run from 26 to 46 street.

"Since the earliest days of our nation, NY has exemplified the American spirit", Trump said, recalling New Yorkers who fought in wars going back to the Revolution. One of the Jews who was saved by Edmonds stand was also present for the event as well as Edmonds' granddaughter.

Council Chairman Douglas McGowan said earlier Trump's appearance should be viewed as a tribute to military veterans rather than any kind of a political statement.

The president is not expected to march along the parade route up Fifth Avenue.

Several of the Veterans Day Parade organizers thanked Trump, a billionaire real estate developer, by name after he supported the event decades ago when it needed funding.

The parade is celebrating its centennial this year.
