Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek gets emotional over contestant's unexpected answer

On the screen where contestants usually write their answers, Dhruv instead wrote, "We [Heart] You, Alex!". "That's very kind. Thank you".

"You're smiling. I like that", Trebek said to the grinning 18-year-old. "I know it's a part of who I am and I just keep going".

The tribute to longtime "Jeopardy!" master of ceremonies Trebek, 79, was especially poignant given the context, as Trebek has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

'Sorry for west coast spoilers, but I'm really glad I got the opportunity to say to Alex what everybody at the tournament was thinking, ' Gaur said.

The Canadian-born trivia show host was touched by a surprise Final Jeopardy answer on the latest episode of the long-running series.

Monday marked the first of three semifinals in this year's Tournament of Champions on "Jeopardy!" which saw Chicago's Emma Boettcher become the first to qualify for the tournament's final later this week.

That part wasn't surprising: The much-loved Trebek is one of the most revered game show hosts of all time. Sending all the love. He tweeted that Trebek had just "shared with us that he was reenteering treatment" and "we were all hurting for him so badly".

And even the show's official account weighed in, tweeting, "Couldn't have said it better ourselves, Dhruv!".

Last week, other Jeopardy contestants announced they are organizing a charitable play-along to help raise money for pancreatic cancer research.

Trebek himself has made a video message encouraging donations to fight the disease.
