Gordon Sondland, Trump's ambassador to the European Union, is among the only people interviewed to date who had direct conversations with the president about the situation, because the White House has blocked others from co-operating with what it dismisses as a sham investigation.

Democrats believe the redacted information could shed light on key episodes of the investigation, including discussions Trump is reported to have had with associates about the release of stolen emails during the campaign and conversations about a 2016 Trump Tower meeting at which Trump's eldest son expected to receive damaging information about Hillary Clinton.

Morrison's testimony contradicted much of what Sondland told congressional investigators during his own closed-door deposition, which the ambassador later amended.

In the heavily redacted report, Mueller did not conclude whether Trump had committed obstruction of justice as investigators looked into whether the president or his allies had a role in the Russian meddling. The format, he said in his final report to Congress, showed "the inadequacy of the written format", especially since the office was unable to ask follow-up questions.

Former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort - now doing time in a federal prison - also apparently told the Mueller grand jury that Trump tried to approach WikiLeaks in 2016, according to the Mueller report.

Two of the three judges who heard arguments at the hearing Monday seemed prepared to order at least some of the material sought by the House for its impeachment inquiry to be turned over. Rogers questioned the Justice Department attorney Mark Freeman in court harshly, at times even openly arguing with points he made.

South Dakota’s ‘I’m on meth’ campaign prompts online guffaws
Noem, appearing in a video for the campaign, said South Dakota's meth problem is " growing at an alarming rate ". The state has also seen the number of people seeking treatment for meth addiction double from 2014 to 2018.

In a separate case, Trump last Thursday asked the Supreme Court to review a New York-based federal appeals court's ruling that local prosecutors can enforce a subpoena also issued to Mazars demanding Trump's personal and corporate tax returns from 2011 to 2018. "Depends on whether a Senate impeachment trial is a "judicial proceeding" under the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure". Two cases concerning his financial documents are now before the Supreme Court and all eyes are on the justices - particularly Trump's two nominees to see whether they will see the issues presented differently than the majority of the lower courts that have delivered resounding losses to the President.

Roberts' order Monday contains no hint about what the court ultimately will do.

The judge in October ruled that the House Judiciary Committee should be permitted to see the grand-jury material in the report and its underlying basis.

Gates' testimony appeared to conflict with sworn written statements that Trump gave Mueller.

In tweets about the Democrats' suggestion that he testify, Trump wrote Monday morning that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "said I could do it in writing" and that he would "strongly consider it!"

The Supreme Court is next scheduled to meet on Friday and may discuss the case then.

Trump eventually provided written answers on some Russia-related topics. "Stone having discussed WikiLeaks with individuals associated with my campaign".
