For once, the late victor never came and Liverpool had to settle for a point.

Reds captain Henderson insists Jurgen Klopp's side can still feel full of confidence heading to Salzburg on December 10.

The Brazil midfielder is suspended for Saturday's Premier League match against Brighton, but manager Jurgen Klopp is anxious he could miss more games. What will not thrill Klopp, however, is seeing an already packed fixture list become that little bit more complicated.

"'Don't do that', that's what I said, because they made a big fuss of the situation", he said.

The trip to Austria comes a week before Liverpool face two games in two days, with a League Cup tie against Aston Villa and the start of their World Club Cup campaign in Qatar. I was not happy with the last 15 minutes of the first half. Klopp can not afford his squad to become too stretched at a crucial point in the campaign.

However, the Italians are the only side to have beaten the European champions this season and proved a thorn in Liverpool's side again.

"It was clear that we wanted to finish it tonight", said Klopp.

However, a talking to from the German inspired a second half turnaround.

Fabinho attempted to play on, but to no avail, with Georginio Wijnaldum replacing him in the 19th minute.

"I don't want to say what I expect", said Klopp.

Two minutes later, it was 1-0.

The Reds also had concerns over Virgil van Dijk, who claimed he had been fouled by Mertens in the build up to Napoli's opener, but the Dutchman carried on.

Austin late Tuesday night turned out to be a blessing for the Bahamas. "I wasn't sure if the guy was going to foul me or not". Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski " told us at halftime about getting back" on defense, guard Cassius Stanley said.

"He couldn't continue, and he is a really hard one".

Obviously I struggle when I play Napoli, sorry for that!

"I think it's a foul, the referee didn't have his best day today, and that is what it is".

The draw for the last 16 of the Champions League takes place on Monday December 16 in Nyon, with proceedings set to start at 11am, United Kingdom time.

Liverpool levelled when Dejan Lovren headed home from a James Milner corner in the 65th minute.

The second half was spent camped in Napoli's half.

Kalidou Koulibaly bailed out his goalkeeper with a clearance off the line from Roberto Firmino after Alex Meret dropped a simple cross into the box.

"We'd have liked to have won, of course, to finish the job [qualification for last 16] but Napoli are a good side and we could only get a point", Henderson told BT Sport.

Eventually it paid off.

Liverpool went behind on 21 minutes thanks to Mertens' smart finish but couldn't find a victor after Lovren's header had equalised 25 minutes from time. We lost the first five Bundesliga games - we had no pre-season.

"The problem was we had the wings open, we tried to use them with the crosses, but we crossed the ball too early most of the time". Now, we have to go to Salzburg. "Why would we plan for Salzburg when we have Napoli? Until then we have to show our ambitions in the Premier League".

There's work to do to make the Champions League round of 16, but the late winners, for now, can be happily saved for the league.
