61 per cent of products were found to be cheaper (or the same price) for at least one day in the six months running up to Black Friday, and 74 per cent were cheaper or the same price in the six months after the event.

On Friday, precisely every week forward of the smartly-behaved delivery up date, Amazon, Currys PC World and John Lewis launched their Black Friday offers, and there some are extreme financial savings to be made.

"Our survey indicates that this popular shopping event is a hype and that there are few real discounts". Another great example of this fact can be seen in one of Amazon's best Black Friday deals, which cuts the price of the Fire TV Stick 4K Ultra HD with Alexa Voice Remote by £20.

The Amazon Echo (2nd Gen) (Smart speaker with Alexa - charcoal fabric) was on offer at £54.99 (39% off) on Amazon but it was cheaper on at least 13 occasions before Black Friday.

At John Lewis, a De'Longhi coffee machine was offered at £399 on Black Friday, but it was then discounted to £368 on at least 35 occasions in the following six months.

But Which? found no evidence that retailers were breaking sales laws.

A Samsung soundbar was a Currys PC World Black Friday deal a year ago at £299. "When we launched our Black Friday event a year ago 40% of those products were the lowest price they had ever been".

Amazon responded, "We aim to provide our customers with excellent value for money through low prices throughout the year and a number of exceptional events on seasonal offers".
