Captain Root has the backing of everybody, says Stokes

Ben Stokes is England's best player and he knows his first innings dismissal was the catalyst for change.

"There are 11 guys on the field in a game that contribute to a win or a loss - it's not all about the captain".

"It can be one of the most criticised jobs in England at times".

Root's position as skipper has come under pressure with the innings defeat in the series opener at Mount Maunganui a continuation of the team's struggles away from home, while the Yorkshireman's own form with the bat has also dipped.

The generalist said that the pressure to be a captain was "huge". "It doesn't all fall on the captain". But unfortunately Joe cops most of that [criticsm]. "But as a playing group, we stick together and we hold our hands up together", he added.

On Saturday July 18, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Aaron Finch might all feature when Manchester Originals entertain Northern Superchargers, while Birmingham Phoenix meet London Spirit at Edgbaston.

Joe Root became England captain in 2017.

The opening Test was marred by racist abuse that England bowler Jofra Archer revealed he suffered from a spectator.

Stokes, who has New Zealand and Maori heritage, described the incident as "pretty horrific" but said the country was better represented by those who offered their support towards Archer.

Taking everything into consideration, I am going to pick New Zealand to win this match. The tattoo on my arm just signifies where the family comes from.

The New Zealand batsman - especially BJ Watling - played Jofra Archer well and I hope Root bowls his fast bowler in shorter, sharper spells.

"In any form or walk of life, you never stop learning, and we are starting a new sort of era now so I'm going to judge this team on where we are now and where we get to". Root urged Archer to "unleash a little bit more" immediately after the Test concluded but Ashley Giles, the men's team's managing director, astutely pointed out that the 24-year-old bowled 42 of the team's 201 overs and that it would be unreasonable to expect him to bowl flat out all the time. Kane Williamson got a good one from Tom Curran in the 1 Test and he is 27/10 to top score for the hosts. "It was a pretty horrific incident and something that shouldn't happen in sport or in the world in general in 2019".
