HIV rate continues decline to record low in British Columbia: Health Ministry

One of the centre's latest projects has been the establishment of a lab on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside to support ongoing research for people living with the virus, while working on new techniques to eliminate the disease.

Since HIV/AIDS were first monitored in the country, a total of 1,160 HIV cases have been recorded. And people who live with the HIV often lack treatment and care.

South Africa has the largest number of HIV Patients in the world but now India and China have more AIDS-infected patients.

Meanwhile, AIDS-related deaths had reduced by 80 per cent since their peak in 2003. "Over 6,000 cases of AIDS and nearly 2,500 AIDS-caused deaths were observed", reads the message.

From the outbreak of AIDS in Cambodia to past year, a total of 155,000 people had become infected and 71,000 of them had died, the report said.

However, Prof. Idoko noted that there is still growing concern of increasing HIV incidences among the youth population (15-24 years).

The plan announced during the State of the Union aims to cut new HIV infections by 75 percent in five years and 90 percent by 2020.

The cumulative number of people living with HIV who have failed to follow up is 989 - with 369 in pre-ART (Anti Retroviral Therapy) and 620 on post ART.

"HIV antiretroviral medicines not only prevents disease progression but also suppress the viral load to an undetectable level", he stated.

Latest Statistics from the NAS and United Nations agencies show that the new infection rate of HIV continues to decline in the country.

UNAIDS executive director Winnie Byanyima said: "When people and communities are empowered and have urgency, change happens". As a result, about 4,500 people at high-risk for contracting an infection have qualified for the potentially life-saving treatment, it says.

"For youths, they should not have sex before getting a good health education first".

Yesterday, Deputy President David Mabuza in his capacity as the chairperson of the SA National Aids Council delivered a keynote address at the World Aids Day National Commemoration event at the James Motlatsi Stadium, Orkney, Klerksdorp, in North West province.

"With a show of hands, how many people take their drugs regularly?" Specifically, employment opportunity denials had dropped to two per cent previous year from 46 per cent in 2010.
