The face of the 20-time Grand Slam victor will be minted on the silver coin, which is expected to be issued on January 23, 2020.

The 20 franc coin's "heads" side will have Federer's image in which he is playing his typical one-handed backhand shot.

With demand expected to be high, Swissmint said another 40,000 coins could be issued in May while a 50 franc gold coin, featuring a different design would also be produced next year.

In a statement, the Swiss Government said Federer is the best-known Swiss person both on and off the court.

It added: 'He is also the flawless ambassador for Switzerland'. "He has a unique way of embodying likeability, down-to-earthiness, success and eloquence".
