She went on to call Trump, the subject of only the fourth presidential impeachment inquiry in history, a "coward" on gun policy, "cruel" on immigration and "in denial" about climate issues.

Pelosi's announcement follows a day of hearings in which a group of law professors met with the House Committee on the Judiciary.

"The president abused his power for his own political benefit", Pelosi said, by withholding military aid and a White House meeting in exchange for Kiev's commitment to investigate Joe Biden, his potential Democratic rival in the 2020 election.

Trump, who has denied any wrongdoing or a "quid pro quo", renewed his attacks on the months-long impeachment process in a series of tweets.

Counsels representing both Democrats and Republicans from the Intelligence and Judiciary committees will make the presentations, Representative Jerrold Nadler, the Democrat who heads the Judiciary Committee, said.

Claiming "the Republicans have never been more united", he said, "We will win!" For Richard Nixon in 1974, the Judiciary Committee drew up five articles of impeachment and approved three of them. The House Republican leader, Kevin McCarthy, tweeted "Pelosi and the Democrats are clearly are blinded by their hate for the President".

And independent voters all across the country overwhelmingly want Democrats to work with President Trump, not against him, on bipartisan proposals like passing U.S. -Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade and measures to lower the cost of prescription drugs.

Unfortunately, we are seeing the founders' fears realized because Democrats are wielding the constitutional power of impeachment as a political weapon.

The White House has so far refused to cooperate with the impeachment proceeding, accusing Democrats of an unfair process, but suggested on Thursday that it would likely be part of the Senate trial. Yes, they do have a case, Pelosi maintained in a formal statement delivered soon after against a backdrop of American flags from the balcony outside her office on Capitol Hill, seat of the US Congress across from the White House.

The latest poll also shows President Trump's job performance tracks better than his predecessor Barrack Obama at same point.

The House is expected to vote on articles of impeachment before the Christmas break. Two other presidents were impeached by the House but acquitted by the Senate. Currently, the Senate has 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents.

The White House, which has refused to cooperate with the inquiry, said Democrats should be "ashamed" for pulling the impeachment trigger.
