Hudak said at least one bullet hit Coral Gables City Hall, which is located across the street from the jewelry store.

The incident began unfolding at about 4 p.m. after police in Coral Gables responded to a silent alarm apparently set off by an employee of a jewelry store.

"When matters get like this, it is hard on all of us", Hudack said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also investigating, Hudak said.

4 people are dead following a UPS truck hijacking, hostage situation, and police chase in Miami, Florida.

Both robbers were shot and killed, and the fourth victim was in a nearby vehicle when shots rang out at a crowded intersection in Miramar, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of where the incident began, FBI Special Agent in Charge George Piro said during a news conference Thursday night.

The FBI on Thursday night acknowledged that four people were killed: the two robbers, a UPS driver who was taken hostage and a bystander who was inside an idle auto at the scene.

Police confirm "multiple" fatalities and "multiple" injuries. Employees were locked down, he said, and none were injured. Television footage showed several officers on foot, some with guns drawn, approaching the truck once it stopped from the rear and the driver's side.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that the abducted "UPS driver could be seen in the truck, sitting on the floor near the center wheel well, during live newscasts of the chase". "And this is what people will do to avoid capture".

Hudak said he did not know whether the people succeeded in taking anything from the jewelry store. "It's going to be a very complicated crime scene".

Hudak said none of his officers was hurt. A worker at the store was injured, though it's unclear if she was shot.

The truck led police on a long chase, hopping curbs, doing U-turns and maneuvering around other vehicles and police.

UPS spokesman David Graves said they are staying in touch with authorities.

The incident came to an end when the truck encountered stopped traffic at an intersection.
