YouTube Rewind 2019 Scraps Old Format After Last Year’s Torrent of Dislikes

"We heard a lot of feedback that the video past year didn't reflect people's experience on YouTube", Kevin Allocca, head of culture and trends at YouTube, said in an interview with Variety. YouTube does poke fun at itself in the very beginning for how bad Rewind 2018 was, but other than that, you're just watching short snippets of other videos that are already on YouTube with some text overlayed on top of them.

In 2019, YouTube is taking a more analytic approach, honoring the most-watched creators, most-watched videos, and channels that broke out in 2019.

The video featured a handful of prominent YouTubers, but kicked off with Hollywood star Will Smith, with many claiming that it was "awkward".

Past year he was involved in a high-profile online battle with Indian music channel T-Series in the race for 100 million subscribers.

R Kelly hit with new charges in NYC
Law enforcement scrutiny of Kelly intensified after several women spoke publicly in a six-part Lifetime documentary, Surviving R. Kelly bribed an IL official to make a fake ID one day before he secretly married 15-year-old singer Aaliyah.

It also has not shied away from featuring controversial creators like David Dobrik and Swedish star PewDiePie, who made an appearance on the list for the first time in two years as the most viewed creator of the year. YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki even revealed that her kids told her the video was "cringey." Rewind 2019 feels like an over-correction on YouTube's part, and as such, we end up with something that's just very meh. It was uploaded to YouTube on December 5, and it's quite a bit different from last year's video.

The 2019 edition was again produced by digital studio Portal A, which has partnered with YouTube for the project since 2012.

He also dodged the 2018 Rewind, despite his high-profile online battle with Indian music label T-Series in the race for 100 million subscribers.
