The Wolverines lost to SC two years ago in the 2017 Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla., after losing to Florida State in the 2016 Orange Bowl in Miami.

"We are extremely honored to be selected to play in the prestigious Outback Bowl against a tremendous opponent in Auburn", Fleck said in a statement.

MI (9-3, 6-3 Big Ten) will play Alabama in the first meeting between the two football programs since 2012.

Auburn beat Alabama, 48-45, on November 30 in the Iron Bowl and is 9-3 overall and 5-3 in the SEC. The game will kick off at noon CT and be broadcast on ESPN. While Michigan has always been out of the playoff picture, having lost two games before November, the same couldn't be said for the Wolverines latest opponent, as the Alabama Crimson Tide were in the hunt all the way until its final game of the season - a close loss at Auburn.

Ninth-ranked Auburn will travel to the Sunshine State for its bowl game. The Gophers are 10-2 this season under third-year coach P.J. Fleck, and are enjoying their first 10-win season in 16 years. "I know our players, staff and fans are excited for this opportunity and to get to Florida". Ohio State was assured a spot in the College Football Playoff after going undefeated, regardless of the outcome in the Big Ten Championship Game.

Auburn did keep rival Alabama from a New Year's Six bowl, though.
